American Indians as Army Scouts

Colonel John Gibbon of the U.S. Seventh Infantry wrote of the American Indian scout: “He knows every path, every pass in the mountains and every waterhole as thoroughly as the antelope or other wild animals which range through it. He knows exactly where he can go and where he cannot.”2

American Indians even scouted for the U.S. Army. Many American Indians began to realize that the coming of the white settlers would not stop. Their land would never be the same again. Instead of fighting against this invasion, some American Indians switched sides and began fighting for the U.S. government. And most were pleased to receive the pay of $13 a month. By 1866, about one thousand American Indians were serving as scouts. Some of the greatest American Indian scouts were Bloody Knife and a Crow scout named Curley, both of whom worked for Custer and the Apache Kid.
